What Is Low-E Glass and Is It Worth It?
I pulled a fogged-up double-pane out of a house in Overland Park last spring. The homeowner pointed at the glass and asked why the “silver stuff” had worn out. That silver stuff is Low-E — short for low emissivity — a microscopic metallic coating that reflects heat while still letting visible light through. In 31 years of installing windows, I’ve never once told a homeowner to skip it. The juice is worth the squeeze almost every time.
How Low-E Coating Actually Works
Picture a coating thinner than a human hair. That’s what you’re dealing with. Manufacturers spray on a layer of metallic oxide, usually silver or tin-based, either during the glass manufacturing process (hard-coat) or after, in a vacuum chamber (soft-coat). That layer bounces long-wave infrared heat back where it came from. It doesn’t block the shorter light waves your eyes actually see.
So in summer, the coating reflects the sun’s heat back outside before it builds up in your living room. In winter, it reflects your furnace-heated air back inside instead of letting it escape through the glass. Same coating, opposite job. Depends on the season and how the window’s oriented on your house.
Soft-Coat vs. Hard-Coat: What’s the Difference?
Most salesmen won’t tell you this part. Hard-coat Low-E gets baked onto the glass while it’s still molten. It’s durable, it’s cheaper, and it lets more heat through, meaning a higher solar heat gain number. Soft-coat gets applied after the glass cools, in a sputtering chamber, and it’s far more precise. You get better performance numbers, but the coating stays fragile until it’s sealed inside a double or triple-pane unit.
Pella and Andersen both use soft-coat Low-E as their standard now. Milgard does too, on anything above their base builder-grade line. If a contractor’s quoting hard-coat Low-E on a full replacement job, ask why. It’s usually a cost-cutting move, not a performance one.
Low-E Coatings Aren’t All the Same
Manufacturers tune Low-E coatings for different climates now. A window headed to Phoenix needs to block solar heat gain hard. A window headed to Minneapolis needs to hold heat in without giving up too much of that free winter sun. That’s why you’ll see multiple Low-E “packages” from the same manufacturer.

Those numbers, 366, 272, 180, come from Cardinal Glass, one of the biggest coating suppliers in the country. Pella, Andersen, and Marvin all license similar tech and rebrand it under their own product names. Don’t get thrown off if your quote uses different terminology.
Reading the NFRC Label
Every legit window sold in the U.S. comes with an NFRC sticker, that’s National Fenestration Rating Council. Skip the marketing copy. Look at three numbers on that label:
- U-Factor — how well the window keeps heat from escaping. Lower is better. Anything at 0.30 or below works for most climates.
- SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) — how much solar heat gets through the glass, and lower means less heat gain, which matters most if you’re in a hot climate.
- VT (Visible Transmittance) — how much natural light comes through. Keep it at 0.40 or higher, or your rooms end up feeling like a submarine.
ENERGY STAR uses these same numbers to certify windows by climate zone: Northern, North-Central, South-Central, and Southern. A window certified for Duluth won’t necessarily carry the ENERGY STAR label in Dallas, and vice versa. Check your zone before you buy. Not after.
Is Low-E Glass Worth the Extra Cost?
Yes. I don’t hedge on this one. Expect Low-E to add $30 to $50 per window over clear glass. That’s pocket change compared to the total job cost. Marvin’s own performance data shows Low-E coatings cut energy loss through the glass by 30 to 50 percent compared to standard clear glass, depending on the coating package and climate.
I’ve had homeowners tell me their heating bills dropped the first winter after a full Low-E replacement. Especially on west and south-facing rooms that used to bake all afternoon. That’s not luck. That’s just physics doing its job.
What I’ve Seen in the Field
I’ve pulled failed IGUs (insulated glass units) out of houses where the Low-E coating degraded because the seal failed and moisture got between the panes. You’ll spot it: a foggy, cloudy look that won’t wipe off. That’s condensation trapped inside the unit, not dirt. Once that seal’s gone, the coating’s compromised and the whole unit needs replacing. No amount of cleaning fixes it.
I’ve also seen homeowners get talked into triple-pane Low-E windows in climates that don’t justify the cost. Triple-pane makes sense in Minnesota or Maine. In Georgia or Southern California, you’re paying for weight and marginal gains that don’t pencil out over 15 years of energy savings. Match the glass package to your actual climate zone. Not what sounds impressive on a sales pitch.
Low-E and Argon Gas: Not the Same Thing
People mix these up constantly. Low-E is the coating on the glass surface. Argon, or krypton, is the gas that fills the space between panes in a double or triple-pane unit. It’s denser than air and slows heat transfer even further. You want both. One without the other still performs fine. Together, that’s when you get U-Factor numbers down in the 0.25 to 0.28 range, the kind that actually shows up on your energy bill.
